Headlines

What appears to be the strongest typhoon of the year hit the central Philippines today, setting off landslides and knocking out power and communications. The massive storm, named Typhoon Haiyan, impacted a number of islands including Samar, Leyte, Cebu and Panay, and hit the region with winds over 200 kilometers (125 mile) per hour.

Responding to this event will be a priority for the region, and RADARSAT-2 products and imagery are ideally suited to provide information about the situation on the ground. The RADARSAT-2 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite enables customers to get the imagery they need to understand the impact of a storm. SAR is unaffected by weather or darkness, and can acquire imagery regardless of the cloud cover. SAR is also ideally suited to identify water levels and can identify flooding with a high degree of accuracy.

MDA has an extensive archive of RADARSAT-2 SAR imagery over the Philippines, and has a series of acquisitions planned over the next few days to help with assessing the situation on the ground. Both high resolution and lower resolution imagery is available, and MDA's operationally-focused production team can deliver flood products based on these new collections.
