The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Finland signed an agreement on 15th December on a collaborative project to establish a regional flood information system in the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region. Finland is providing a maximum of 2 million Euros over three years (2009- 2012) for the project which will be implemented by ICIMOD in close collaboration with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the six regional partner countries Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Nepal, and Pakistan.

The European Commission today announced that it has selected the consortium led by OHB-System AG and Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) for building and testing 14 satellites for the Galileo satellite navigation system, a programme of and funded by the European Union. This selection is a major milestone for the European Commission, assisted by the European Space Agency, which initiated the tendering process for these satellites in September 2008.

The Human Genome Organization's Pan-Asian SNP Consortium conducted research to determine the origin and ancestry of more than 70 Asian populations. Researchers, from 10 Asian countries as well as the United States, used microarrays to map the genetics and found that while most genetic clusters corresponded to language groups, geography was also a factor in the patterns. The study, which appeared in the journal Science, concluded that Asian populations have genetic contributions from five language groups, three ethnic groups, and two small individual groups from Borneo and Thailand.

Vexcel Imaging GmbH, a Microsoft company, has signed a purchase agreement with GeoForce Technologies Co., Ltd. of Taiwan to upgrade an UltraCamD to an UltraCamXp Wide Angle large format digital aerial camera system. The deal was brokered by Imagemaps, Vexcel Imaging’s sales representative responsible for the People’s Republic of China, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand and ASEAN (Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar).

The Mines bureau will spend P60 million this year to complete a nationwide geohazard map. The project to assess areas susceptible to coastal erosion, landslides, floods and other instabilities began in 1996. To date, roughly 90% of the project is completed on the 1:50,000 geohazard maps, with 454 finished maps, and 381 draft maps.
