Southeast Asia Land Management and Measurement

Tuesday 16 Feb 2010

The Cambodia government is in the initial stages of developing a new land management strategy the Phnom Penh Post reports.

That the country's government hopes to establish specific areas for conservation and development.

Citing "constant population growth and the changes in lifestyle in the cultural and economical context of globalisation require effective land management,” the government recognises that avoiding conflict is part of the strategy and a goal.

As the upcoming FIG 2010 Conference in Australia indicates, "never before has the need to 'Face the Challenge' - the challenge to share ideas and resources; to cooperate between nations, between generations and between disciplines – been more urgent."

Indeed. Recently a long standing dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has been inflamed due, in part, to the designation of a UNESCO site right on the border of between the two countries.

Instead of acting as a focal point to generate harmony and connectedness, the UNESCO site at Preah Vihear temple World Heritage site on the border has raised issues relating to basic land measurement and ownership - once again.

This case is yet another example of the need for basic measurement and determination of boundaries. It is not alone, there are many others in a similar situation around the world. Arctic sovereignty, the Middle East and other places being the most prominent.
