The 4th International Workshop on Geographical Analysis, Urban Modelling and Spatial Statistics (GEOG-AN-MOND 09) is being held in conjunction with the 2009 International Conference on Computational Science and its Applications (ICCSA 2009). The events will be held 29 June-2 July in Yongin, Korea. The deadline for full paper submissions is 16 February.

ISRO GSLV-III to Enter Crucial Test Phase

ISRO scientists are preparing for what the space agency says is a crucial test phase for its Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) Mark III. GSLV-III is designed to launch 4-tonne satellites into geostationary orbit. The next generation launch vehicle is expected to half the cost of putting satellites into orbit.

Wuhan University Professor Honoured

Prof. Deren Li of Wuhan University in China has received an honorary doctorate degree from ETH (Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich. Li is renowned for his contribution to photogrammetry, remote sensing and GIS and is a member of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

RSI Softech India has signed an exclusive agreement with Dublin-based eSpatial to become the master distributor for iSmart in India. iSmart is eSpatial's geospatial software suite. RSI Softech is a subsidiary of Remote Sensing Instruments (RSI). RSI specialises in medium and large scale GIS application development.

Japanese Petition To Ban Street View

A group of Japanese lawyers and professors have asked Google to cancel its Street View offering in Japan, saying the service violates privacy rights. ‘We strongly suspect that what Google has been doing deeply violates a basic right that humans have,’ Yasuhiko Tajima, a professor of constitutional law at Sophia University in Tokyo, told Reuters.

Earth Observation Tops Government Space Expenditure

Earth observation is the number one satellite-based application worldwide, with governments spending $6.7 billion on EO in 2008, according to a report from international satellite research and consulting firm Euroconsult. The same report named satellite navigation as the fastest growing application in public sector investment in 2008, reaching $2.6 billion.

New Earth Systems Research Centre: South Africa

The National Research Foundation has launched the Africa Centre for Climate and Earth System Science (ACCESS), hosted at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in South Africa. CSIR researcher and ACCESS supervisor Neville Sweijd says the centre will help African scientists to contribute an African perspective to global climate change research.

Digital Maps To Aid Indian Farmers

In a move aimed at preventing land disputes among farmers, the Uttar Pradesh government in India is using satellite imagery to update its existing land maps and produce digital records. It has asked the Remote Sensing Application Centre (RSAC) to generate satellite imagery of the region for comparison with paper records.

Emergency Management Conference: Beijing

The international conference on Geospatial Solutions for Emergency Management (GSEM 2009) is being held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping in Beijing, 14-16 September 2009. The organisers are calling for papers on themes including data and image fusion, disaster management and new sensors. The deadline for abstracts is 31 March.

Global Land Cover Map Now Online

The European Space Agency’s global land cover map – which the agency says is 10 times sharper than any previous global satellite map – is now available online. It is the highest resolution, completely validated land cover map ever released, says the agency. It was generated using 19 months of data from Envisat’s MERIS instrument, at 300 metre resolution.

Virtual Earth Honoured at Map World Forum

GIS Development will present Microsoft Virtual Earth with an award for Popularising Geospatial Content to Common Man Worldwide at Map World Forum 2009 (10-13 February, Hyderabad). Microsoft general manager, Dr John Curlander, will accept the award at the opening ceremony on 10 February. Google Earth received the award in 2007.

Laserscanning 2009 is the 6th edition of the ISPRS workshop dedicated to the processing and the analysis of point clouds acquired and generated from active airborne and terrestrial sensors. Japan Protests Chinese Survey Ships

Beijing has dismissed Tokyo’s protests over two Chinese survey ships sailing in what both countries consider to be their territorial waters. The diplomatic row is the latest incident in a long-simmering dispute centred on a group of uninhabited islands in the East China Sea. The islands – called the Diaoyu in Beijing, Tiaoyutai in Taiwan and Senkaku in Japan – are held by Japan but claimed by China and Taiwan.

GeoEye Finalises NGA Contract

The Pentagon's National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency has given GeoEye, Inc a contract valued at US$12.5 million per month for the next year. Under the agreement, GeoEye will supply satellite imagery products to the NGA as soon as its GeoEye-1 satellite begins commercial operations. The contract also includes images from the company’s Ikonos satellite.

Indian Earthquake Prediction Research

The state administration in Gujarat is to acquire multi-parametric geophysical observatories as part of a program earthquake prediction research. The Institute of Seismological Research will install 3 systems at Kutch, reports Indianexpress.com. ISR has also finished installing 10 out of 25 GPS stations that will be used in the study of crustal deformation in the region.
