Need for Nautical Chart Cartography Training

Wednesday 10 Feb 2010

Scientists at the Dalian Naval Academy in China have identified a need for training nautical chart cartographers. China is one of few countries that has set up training for nautical chart cartography.

With digital charts replacing paper based nautical mapping, there is a great need to not only update marine information, but there is also growing demand to convert valuable historical information held within paper based records to digital formats. Marine historians, geological records and unique pieces of marine based information would benefit from this development.

The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is centrally placed support this transition. The International Cartographic Association is also involved in some of this work.

The Singapore Government provides a wealth of information about Electronic Navigation Charting as does the company FUGAWI. The also supplies a large amount of information on the topic of electronic navigation charting
