The Malaysian aerospace contractor Astronautic Technologies Sdn Bhd has begun design studies for an Earth observation satellite that will have sub-two metre resolution.
Meanwhile, ATSB is in the final stages of preparing for the launch of Razaksat, a 200-kg satellite with 2.5 metre resolution. It will have a design life of about three years.
It has also built two microsatellites, Cubesat and Innosat. They will be launched along with Razaksat on a Russian Denipr to test miniturisation technologies in a space environment.
ATSB is also heavily involved with a communications satellite to provide secure communications for Malaysian government offices across the peninsula and on Borneo.
Speaking to the Map Asia conference in Kuala Lumpur on Monday (18 August), senior vice president Norhizam Hamzah said the one of the biggest problems faced by his company was the inability of US suppliers to deliver parts or services because of US government policy. Notwithstanding, it would still be possible to build and launch a satellite that met ambitious technical targets.
