Global Map of Vegetation

Wednesday 15 Oct 2008

The International Steering Committee for Global Mapping has released maps of the world's land cover and its tree cover as part of Global Map Version 1. The image data was produced in TIFF format from Land Cover data and Percent Tree Cover data.

To allow the data to be used over the internet, it was divided into 72 tiles. Attached to each tile is a word file, which can be treated as data with positional information in GIS and other software. The details of each TIFF data are described in a meta data file attached to the downloaded file.

ISCGM was established in 1996 in Tsukuba Japan as part of the Japanese government's response to the UN environment summit held in 1992. Agenda 21 of that conference called for an action program for addressing global environment challenges. Its mission is to foster the development of global mapping at a scale of 1:1 million.
