The surveyor-general of India, Rajendra S. Tanwar, will lead a pilot project using the ‘Kumar Mapping’ (KMap) system. This system proposes to map the Earth’s surface as a mosaic of small trapeziums and triangles.
Created by Muneendra Kumar, the KMap system is designed to eliminate the need for projection mapping by producing maps and charts that are virtually distortion-free. The Earth’s curved surface is mapped as ellipsoidal trapezoids. The exact shape of each trapezoid is a function of its latitude. At the poles, they are triangles.
These trapezoids are mapped to flat trapeziums or triangles with the same side lengths as the corresponding curved side.
The meeting was attended by directors, scientists, and other experts from Survey of India, Military Survey, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Airports Authority of India, and the Indian Naval Hydrographic Department.
The joint project, which aims to make Indian datum, maps and charts among the best in the world, will begin this month.
