JAXA-AIT Grants On Again

Tuesday 27 May 2008

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) will again offer grants this year for researchers using data from the Diachi advanced land observation satellite for climate change studies.

JAXA is the agency responsible for Japan’s national space programs. AIT is a Bangkok-based educational esatablishment with a large specialisation in the geosciences.

‘Mini Project’ has been running since 2004. The aim is to carry out end-to-end capacity building activities through projects on real-world problems. Mini-projects are recognised as a part of JAXA’s Sentinel Asia project since 2006.

To qualify for an award, projects must be related to disasters or environmental problems. The project proposal must be submitted by a lead agency with a partner agency. Ideally, one of them should be a mapping or space agency and the other a user.

The duration of projects are generally one year but may be extended depending on availability of funds and the significance of the first year results. The project schedule should include two to three weeks of initial training and project planning at AIT. AIT facilities should also be used for data analysis and workshops.

Training, workshop fees, travel and accommodation costs will be supported by JAXA.

The closing date for submission of proposals is 20 June, with the first planning workshop at AIT scheduled for August.

Contact JAXA or AIT for further information or to submit project proposals.
