Open Source Remote Sensing

Monday 26 May 2008

Version 1.1 of Terralook desktop software has just been released. It is a free open source image processing and GIS package.

Terralook is designed for use with NASA imagery available through the US Geological Service.

Imagery can be selected and ordered using the USGS GloVis tool at the Terralook website.

Full-country image collections have been created for many countries and can be downloaded here. Currently available countries include all of Central and South America, all of Southeast Asia (except for some Indonesian islands), India and much of Africa. For most countries, coverage is complete for 1975, 1990, and 2000, and for protected areas from 2000-2007.

The images are in a geo-referenced JPEG format, which means practically anyone with a computer will be able to view them. Moreover, anyone with a software tool that has some GIS capabilities can add overlays such as park boundaries, poaching sites and trails.

When the imagery is used inside TerraLook, common GIS and image processing functions can be undertaken.

Version 1.1 fixes bugs from version 1.0, and contains other internal improvements. It supports a variety of new capabilities including true pan, image adjustment, collection merging and customisable user preferences. It has English, Spanish and French interfaces.
