On 3 May, tropical cyclone Nargis swept over Burma (Myanmar), pummelling the country with winds reaching speeds of more than 200 kph and a storm surge that climbed 3.6 metres. It is the deadliest cyclone to hit Asia since 1991, when 143,000 people perished in Bangladesh.
The latest estimates are that Nargis killed about 100,000 people. An estimated 1.5 million people are trying to rebuild their lives amid the chaos. Rescue and recovery work to aid the victims are underway, but have been hampered due to the lack of maps and GIS data.
A spokeswoman said many government and non-government agencies had approached the company in recent weeks for map data.
Organisations in Burma (Myanmar) that need such maps and files but have limited internet access may request CD and hardcopies from Credent’s office in Yangon. Contact Zaw Naing, Credent's country manager, at +95-9-501-0037.
