Infoterra Mobile Laser Mapping

Tuesday 24 Jun 2008

Infoterra has launched a new mobile laser mapping system called Rapid Surveyor. The company says it captures higher-quality data at a much faster speed than traditional terrestrial-based surveys.

Rapid Surveyor is designed to produce realistic street-level visualisations or what the company calls ‘immersive 3D representations’ of the built environment. It uses a complete 360 degree field-of-view to maximise data coverage within a 100 metre radius and makes up to 200,000 measurements per second. In addition, up to 600 colour images are simultaneously collected per minute by two cameras.

The product is mounted on a 4WD vehicle and features two Optech Lynx Mobile Mapper lidar sensors, each operating at 100,000 measurements per second. The sensors, designed specifically for mobile data capture, are positioned at an angle that means the system’s lasers cross each other's field-of-view. When the vehicle moves forward, an object is imaged twice by the sensors but at different times. This minimises shadows and occlusions and captures the front of objects such as bridges and road signs.

The company says Rapid Surveyor can identify and accurately position assets such as poles and road drainage features for planning and infrastructure management. It anticipates the product will dramatically reduce the time required for major infrastructure mapping projects.

At this stage, distribution of this product in the Asia Pacific region is unclear.
