Nine papers have won the ISPRS Prizes for Best Papers by Young Authors. The Award consists of a cheque for SF2500 and a certificate, donated by Sherman WUon Space Science or Real-time Photogrammetry. The authors will be required to attend the Congress to receive the award and present their paper. The papers will be presented on 8 July.

Map maker Tele Atlas and Search engine provider Google have signed an agreement under which Google will use TeleAtlas road maps of more than 200 countries in its websites. The agreement also covers dynamic content held by TeleAtlas.

From this month, the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association will produce a Chinese-language version of its free electronic newsletter for the Asia Pacific, Spatial Data Infrastructure – Asia and the Pacific. The Taiwanese ministry of the interior will provide the translation. The newsletter covers spatial data infrastructure, GIS, remote sensing, and geospatial data issues.

The Hong Kong Lands Department has awarded ESRI a US$4.9 million contract to replace its Computerised Land Information System. CLIS houses digital map data and land boundary records accessed by 450 users. ESRI will replace the existing CLIS with an enterprise GIS incorporating ArcGIS software, allowing users to work with one central geodatabase instead of disparate silos of data.

The Chinese GIS vendor SuperMap has received a letter of appreciation from the National Geomatics Centre of China for providing free software and technical services as part of the Sichuan earthquake relief effort. SuperMap was one of a number of vendors with operations in China that responded to calls for more software and staff to run it.

A cloud profiling radar developed by JAXA will fly on board Europe's Earthcare satellite in 2013. Astrium GmbH won the contract – worth €263 million – to provide the satellite from the European Space Agency. This is the sixth Earth Explorer mission of ESA's Living Planet Program. The contract covers the design, development and integration of the satellite.

Geodesists are considering the use of so called electronic very long baseline interferometry (e-VLBI) as a way of tracking the movement of the base stations that make up the world's fundamental reference frame, the International Terrestrial Reference Frame. This would have major implications for improved understanding of Earth processes such as earthquakes, tidal movements and the movements of continents.

The much anticipated Jason-2 satellite blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in the US on a Delta II rocket on 20 June. Jason-2 is a joint venture between NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (the French space agency), and the European Meteorology Satellite service.

Credent Technology in Singapore is hosting a website containing maps, satellite imagery and GIS data related to damage caused by Cyclone Nargis. The site, found at www.nargismaps.com, is designed for use by relief agencies. Rescue and recovery work to aid the victims are underway, but have been hampered due to the lack of maps and GIS data.

Infoterra has launched a new mobile laser mapping system called Rapid Surveyor. The company says it captures higher-quality data at a much faster speed than traditional terrestrial-based surveys. It uses a complete 360 degree field-of-view to maximise data coverage within a 100 metre radius and makes up to 200,000 measurements per second.

Spatial data management provider 1Spatial has acquired ComSine. ComSine specialises in the development of telecommunications, navigation and geographic information. The company intends to use ComSine's intellectual property in the communications sector to venture into the sensor web enablement marketplace. It expects the acquisition to increase its topline annual revenues by about £0.5 million (US $986,000).

Spot Image and ESRI have issued an international call for projects for Planet Action. Planet Action was established by the two companies with the aim of helping NGOs, institutions and universities working on climate change by providing geographic information, Earth observation images and expertise.
