China Satellite Launch

China Launches Two Earth Observation Satellites in Four Days

As the rest of the world laments the loss of earth observation capacity -- with a recent report of a U.S. decline from 23 satellites to just six by 2020, and the confirmed loss of Europe's Envisat satellite -- China has accomplished the remarkable feat of launching two remote sensing satellites within four days. The launch of the Tianui-1B mapping satellite has been closely followed by the launch of Yaogan Weixing-14, an optical remote sensing satellite on May 10.

Pakistan Introduces GIS to Census Process for Credibility and Transparency

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) introduced a Geographical Information System (GIS) Laboratory with an objective to bring credibility and transparency in the overall census data collection system and make it at par with international standards.

GIS to Increase GVMC Property Tax Revenue

With the survey of properties under Geographic Information System (GIS) almost over, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is likely to issue its demand notices for property tax incorporating results of the survey. The GIS survey that took more than three years covered 3.56 lakh properties. Following some discrepancies, officials took up on-field, random verification of the GIS findings.

Malaysian State Pushes GIS for Development Planning

Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment, Datuk Amar Tengah Ali Hasan, emphasised the growing importance of leveraging Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in enhancing the planning and decision making capabilities of public sector organisations.  According to the Minister, GIS at present is recognised as an evolving field with an equally growing importance in various sectors.

North Korea Pumps up the GPS Jamming in Week-long Attack

Over the past two weeks, North Korea has used jamming equipment to interfere with global positioning system (GPS) signals near South Korea’s two largest airports outside its capital city Seoul and across the center of the Korean peninsula. The jamming caused no accidents or loss of life, but it demonstrates that North Korea is getting more and more brazen in its efforts to mess with South Korea's high-tech infrastructure.

Nokia's Massive Launch of Local Mapping Services for India

Last year, Nokia owned mapping service NAVTEQ introduced indoor mapping called Destination Maps for navigation beyond the front door. NAVTEQ is the first major mapping service to bring indoor mapping to India. The product is being launched with indoor maps for 150 malls in 17 cities.

Foreigner Tops List of Unlawful Survey Cases

About 40 cases of illegal geographic surveying cases involving foreign individuals or organizations have been investigated since 2006, some of which involved stealing military information that could threaten national security, according to the country's surveying and mapping administration. The administration over the weekend disclosed the top 10 unlawful surveying cases in 2011, with a case involving a US citizen ranking first.

The European Commission has announced the launch date of the next pair of ESA-procured Galileo satellites. These will launch together on a Soyuz from French Guiana on 28 September 2012, joining the two Galileo satellites already in orbit.

Australian Technology Wins International Geospatial Award

A spatial information technology project developed by PSMA Australia has won a major award at the Geospatial World Forum Conference, held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The Geospatial World Policy Award for Exemplary Implementation of Geospatial Policies and Programs was awarded to PSMA Systems in recognition of the technology’s role in significantly improving and streamlining the mechanism for collection, assembly and delivery of fundamental geospatial information for Australia.

Astrium's SpaceDataHighway Promises Imagery Anywhere in Minutes

Astrium, in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), is working to build a satellite communication system to speed the delivery of high resolution imagery anywhere on the planet with near real-time speeds. This ambitious project will support ESA's Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) satellites, while also offering capacity for commercial partners to send their own large image files via the network for a fee.

Contact Lost with Flagship Envisat Spacecraft

Contact has been lost with the European Space Agency's (Esa) flagship Earth observation mission - Envisat. Controllers stopped receiving data from the eight-tonne spacecraft on Sunday, and have not as yet been able to re-establish communications.

Australia Calls for Unified Map Data Network

Australia is still lagging badly in providing a comprehensive, detailed and nationwide network of spatial data which is essential in most areas of government, from handling natural disasters to adjudicating between militant farmers’ groups and coal seam gas extraction projects, according to a spatial industries group. While deficiencies in flood mapping have been highlighted since the disastrous 2010 Queensland floods, a much-improved spatial data network should be informing a range of other government activities and policies, says the Spatial Industries Business Association.

Lockheed Loses $70 Million Over GPS Satellite Overruns

Lockheed Martin will lose its entire fee of about $70 million to defray an 18 percent cost overrun on the first newly designed Global Positioning System satellites, according to the Air Force. The Bethesda-based company, the biggest U.S. defense contractor, had estimated that it would cost $1.5 billion to develop, test and build the first two GPS III satellites. However, Air Force spokeswoman Vicki Stein said the cost had risen to $1.62 billion.

New Micro Laser Adds Precise Measurement to Handhelds

UK-based Measurement Devices Ltd. (MDL) has developed a tiny eye-safe micro laser for the mobile phone market that could revolutionize field data collection. The Micro Laser Module can make hundreds of measurement a second for objects within a 120-meter radius and weighs only 34 grams. Now that the hardware has been developed it is being marketed to original equipment manufacturers for the development of software and interfaces for different applications.

North Korean Rocket Launch Fails

Despite warnings and appeals from many countries, North Korea went ahead with a rocket launch Friday but officials in South Korea, Japan and the U.S. said it appeared the rocket failed not long after the launch.

Nighttime Observations Offer Urban Insight

Recently, the European Space Agency designed and developed, along with with Dutch company Cosine, a motorized tripod called NightPod to take nighttime images of the Earth from the International Space Station. Prior to this device, the speed of the space station made picture taking difficult due to the speed of the Space Station and the low shutter speeds required to capture light at night. With this capability, we're reminded of the utility of nighttime images to inform about human settlement, and mapping land cover.
