The Chinese authorities deployed a number of geospatial technologies in the search and capture of a notorious drug kingpin that was wanted in the deaths of 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River. The mission involved a manhunt of an elusive fugitive living overseas who was armed and dangerous, and aided by locals. Additionally, the call was to "catch him alive," which further complicated the mission.
The Delhi High Court made GPS and printers mandatory for all auto-rickshaws in Delhi this September, with deployment beginning next month. The equipment is meant to ensure that the public is taken to their desired destination via the shortest route, not gouged for fare, and also ensures greater rider safety. This program is part of the Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transport Systems (DIMTS), which is a joint operation between the government of Delhi and the technology company IDFC, with Intelligent Transport Systems and asset management that also extends to the regional bus service.
A new system that uses sensor fusion to integrate GPS with accelerometers and gyroscopes is said to reduce the margin of error on location from 50 to 90 percent in urban environments. The system, designed by researchers at the University of Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M), improves upon traditional accuracy of 50 meters in areas where visibility to satellites and signal bounce degrade the signal down to 1 and 2 meter accuracy.
There are a number of ongoing debates taking place around the world about the proper policy and safeguards against drone use both domestically and for military surveillance and strikes. While much of the debate centers on the escalating military use of drones, they also involve the outright restriction against drone use for surveillance of citizens. Meanwhile, with an ongoing space race in Asia, and escalating geopolitical tensions, a drone race may also be developing.
With rapid urbanization, parcel-based or 2D cadastre records are running against limitations for land administration. A 3D cadastre offers an effective means to register and manage property in dense and complex urban spaces. With implications for legal, institutional, safety and cultural policies, many countries are pursuing the 3D framework.
