Laser scanning as a method of storage of spatial information is used in various economic sectors, and is increasingly being used to capture the complexity of industrial plants. The use of laser scanning for industrial design, or more precisely on the execution of a 3D scan of the petrochemical complex for the production of synthetic rubber, was used to create a three-dimensional digital model of four plants for the production of isoprene (raw material for rubber). The TogliattiKauchuk factory is located in Togliatti, Russia and is one of the largest petrochemical enterprises producing rubber.

Indonesia's open-source disaster measurement tool supported by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) has been recognized by Wired Magazine as a top 10 open source 'rookie of the year' project. The project's commitment to the open source community along with its multi-institutional collaboration are what made the project stand out. The tool is part of GFDRR's Open Data for Resilience Initiative (OpenDRI) that is a collaboration between the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific Disaster Risk Management team, the Australian Government (AusAID) through the Australia-Indonesia Facility for Disaster Reduction (AIFDR) and the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNBP).
European satellite builder Astrium has a wide-area geostationary surveillance and observation platform planned, and is looking to an Asian country to become the partner on the project. The GO-3S satellite is planned for 36,000 km orbit where it will take 3-meter resolution images at the rate of five images per second over an area of 100 km x 100 km for 14 hours per day, capable of covering one quarter of the Earth's surface each day. The large satellite will be 10-meters long and weigh 4.9 tons.
A new not-for-profit called VANZI Ltd. has been set up to broker the framework for a fully integrated and secure 3D computer model for both the natural and built environment in both countries. The idea is a photo-realistic 3D model down to 20cm scale that includes surface details, structural elements, legal property details as well as underground infrastructure services. The initiative has gained initial government support, and events are planned for this Spring to move the vision forward.
The Chinese authorities deployed a number of geospatial technologies in the search and capture of a notorious drug kingpin that was wanted in the deaths of 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River. The mission involved a manhunt of an elusive fugitive living overseas who was armed and dangerous, and aided by locals. Additionally, the call was to "catch him alive," which further complicated the mission.
