Mapping Fiji's Forest Cover with the Help of Satellite Imagery

SPC is working with the Fiji Department of Forestry to build capacity in using very high resolution satellite images to map land and forest cover in Fiji. The programme will include 'ground truthing' exercises (on-site verification of data from satellite imagery) in Drawa, Vanua Levu - a model area for sustainable natural resource management that covers about 6,400 hectares of indigenous forest. The satellite images will be used to classify the Drawa forest into different forest types. This information will help in estimating forest carbon stocks and will contribute to REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). Read More
