Organised together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines and with assistance from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, the workshop provided a forum for experts involved in ICI projects in nine South-East Asian countries and the Pacific Islands. Delegates represented governments, the private sector and civil society. Speakers included high-level representatives of the government of the Philippines, notably Secretary Mary Ann Lucille L. Sering, Vice-Chair of the Philippine Climate Change Commission, and For. Neria Andin, Director of the DENR Forest Management Bureau.
Participants exchanged views and experience on how ICI projects contribute to national strategies to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD-plus) and how such activities enhance co-benefits and integrate safeguards. The Workshop raised issues on how to enhance REDD-Plus co-benefits and how to ensure safeguards during implementation of related activities. Key Messages from the Workshop were sent to the REDD+ Partnership Meeting in Panama, end of September.
The Workshop Report and a Discussion paper on “Maximizing the Co-benefits of REDD-plus Actions” can now be found at http://www.bmu-klimaschutzinitiative.de/en/press?p=1&d=262
The workshop results are a joint contribution of the BMU International Climate Initiative and DENR Philippines to exchange of knowledge and the process of learning under the REDD-Plus Partnership. Its results may also be used as an input to the international discussion on REDD-Plus co-benefits and safeguards during the UNFCCC COP 17 in Durban.
