For the first time ever, the International GIS Day is set to be celebrated in Southern Leyte on November 17, 2011 spearheaded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH – Environment and Rural Development (EnRD) and Decentralization (DP) Programs, together with the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College-Regional Environmental Information System (UPVTC-REIS) and the City Government of Maasin.
GIS Day is an annual global event held every November with the goal of promoting awareness of Geographic Information System (GIS), showcasing that technology has real-world applications and can create positive impacts on our society, Dr. Andreas Lange, Chief Adviser Natural Resources Governance Environment and Rural Development Program, informed. “GIS for Effective Planning” is this year’s local theme for the International GIS Day 2011 Celebration.
