The Census Organisation– Registrar General of India received a Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award at the 2011 ESRI International User Conference (ESRI UC) in San Diego, California. The organization received this honor for its vision, leadership, innovative use of ESRI's geographic information system (GIS) technology. Registrar General of India was selected among the various organizations worldwide and recognized during SAG awards ceremony at ESRI International User Conference for making the country’s most important contributions through Mapping India Census through GIS.
Census mapping provided an accurate geographic frame to ensure distinctiveness of units of enumeration. Various level of territorial units according to which census is to be conducted are clearly delineated and their maps are secured. The maps help to clearly demarcate the boundaries of the country as well as its division into provincial territories and further sub-division into districts and down to the smallest enumeration areas of villages and towns. The census organization made sure that these maps representing the latest position of the administrative jurisdiction and all changes notified by the State Government in respect of the clubbing of villages or determination of boundaries of municipalities etc., are properly accounted for. The purpose is to ascertain that the units of enumeration are not overlapping and that they are collectively exhaustive. These maps are used in each phases of census taking, i.e., House listing operation and Population Enumeration.
Census has been the only organization in the country producing GIS based Thematic Maps for all kinds of valuable information on Demography (Population characteristics), Economic Activity, Literacy & Education, Housing & Household Amenities, Urbanization, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, Language, Religion, Migration, Disability and many other socio-cultural aspects. This is evident from Census 2011 that has collected data down from large cities to village, town and ward level.
Speaking on the Award, Dr. C. Chandramouli, IAS, Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India said that “the Census 2011 is 15th in the series since 1881 and 7th since Independence. To cover all the areas in the country without omission and overlapping, the organization prepare administrative maps of all levels including interactive thematic presentation of data using GIS Technology. The Census organistion has used ESRI’s GIS technology extensively in the 2011 Census Operations which has now become a friendly tool to analyse Census data.”
Congratulating the Registrar General of India on receiving the SAG award, Mr. S. Sridhar, President and Chief Operating Officer, ESRI India said, "It is a privilege for GIS users in India that the Census Organisation has been honored with this prestigious award. We are pleased to be associated with this state-of-art information system that has made use of the Esri GIS technology for the societal benefit of the country facilitating the services under the Government schemes / programmes, improve planning and help strengthen security of the country”.
The award was presented to RGI by Mr. Jack Dangermond, President Esri Inc at a Special Evening organised during Mr. Dangermond’s recent visit to India. The award was collected by the Census Officials on behalf of Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India
