Nepal Sets Out to Measure the World's Tallest Peak

The world's highest peak, Mount Everest, has been measured many times, but the exact height of the mountain is still somewhat in debate. The last expedition to survey the mountain was in 2005 by China's State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping, marking the peak at 8,844.43m (29,017 ft), with a 3.55m ice cap, but that was 6 meters less than an American expedition in 1999 that first used GPS technology, and 7 cm less than an Indian suvey in 1955.

Japan's Zenrin May Buy 24% In GIS Firm MapMyIndia

Japanese map publisher Zenrin Co Ltd may acquire 24% stake for $30 Mn in CE Info Systems Pvt Ltd, which runs MapMyIndia.com, an online map service. The deal will value MapMyIndia at $125 Mn. If the deal materialises, MapMyIndia may use the funds to expand operations and launch new products. The deal may also offer a partial exit to some of the existing PE investors.

Russia Sends Observation Satellite Into Space

A Russian Zenith-3M rocket with an observation satellite blasted off early Monday, the Russian space agency Roscosmos said. The rocket with Fregat-SB upper stage and Russian astrophysical observatory Spectrum-R lifted off at 6:31 a.m. Moscow time (0231 GMT) from Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan.

Bangalore Meteorological Center Improves Weather Mapping

In an effort to improve and enhance weather mapping capabilities, Bangalore Meteorological Centre, India Meteorological Department (IMD), under its modernisation project is installing about 100 Automatic Rain Gauges (ARG) and two Doppler Weather Radars (DWR) across the state. In addition to collecting rainfall data, the station can also be equipped to collect information regarding temperature and humidity.
