The Worry of Conflicting GNSS Spectrum Spreads Globally

You've likely heard of the ongoing battle between next-generation wireless network start-up LightSquared and the GPS position community. The Federal Communication Commission green-lighted the technology, but ongoing testing shows that its signal is in conflict with GPS signals, harming accuracy and even blocking GPS signals in some cases. Those opposing the network fear that without the proper fuss now at first sign of GPS interference, the technology might just jump to global areas where there are less restrictions.

Integration: CAD - GIS & Point Clouds

Computer-aided design (CAD) and point clouds are a powerful combination. Laser scanning and lidar can provide data capture capability, producing point clouds for most kinds of infrastructure and surfaces. Meanwhile, CAD software is particularly useful for generating vector-based designs suitable for architectural, road, rail, utility and other design use. The Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technology Centre of Excellence (JALBTCX), has announced Fugro Senior Survey Manager Nigel Townsend, as a 2011 recipient of the LCDR Peter Johnson Award for Survey Best Practice. The award particularly recognises Nigel’s leadership and Fugro staff’s professionalism for their role in a recent Qatar Petroleum’s (QP) combined Airborne Lidar Bathymetry and multibeam echo sounder survey.

India Govt Eases Data Policy for Remote Sensing

The government, late on Monday night, announced a forward looking and new data sharing policy for India's Remote Sensing satellites. The new policy effectively breaks the monopoly that Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had on the remote sensing sector.

GPS Satellite Achieves 20 Years On-orbit

GPS Block IIA-11 (SVN-24), built by Boeing (formerly Rockwell Corporation), was launched on July 4, 1991 and set healthy to navigation and timing users on Aug. 31, 1991. SVN-24 will reach 20 years on-orbit on July 4. SVN-24 was the second space vehicle in the series of the GPS IIA satellites to be launched with a design life of 7 ½ years. Not only are the GPS Block IIA satellites exceeding their design life they are actually doubling it. In the case of SVN-24, along with SVN-23, launched on Nov. 26, 1990, their on-orbit life has nearly tripled.

Close Co-operation in Hydrography Between China and Hong Kong

The China Maritime Safety Administration (China MSA) and the Hong Kong Marine Department held a friendly meeting in Guangzhou on June 21 and 22 to forge close co-operation in hydrographic matters between the two sides. The meeting achieved co-ordinated consensus on the exchange of information for nautical charts and the coverage of paper nautical charts and electronic navigational charts (ENCs) involving waters of the Mainland and Hong Kong.

Maha Govt to Rope in Private Land Surveyors

The Maharashtra cabinet today decided to give licenses to private land surveyors to carry out land survey in the state for boundary demarcation to help expedite pending cases. According to the decision, government-approved surveyors will be appointed in each district and trained for the job.After that, they will be empanelled in each district. The educational qualification required for the surveyor, will be diploma in Civil Engineering or a surveyor's diploma from ITI.

OGC Seeks Comment on Geography Markup Language 3.3 Standard

GML 3.3 builds on GML 3.2.1, published by ISO as ISO 19136:2007, and extends GML with additional schema components based on requirements requested by various domains of interest. For example, the 3d modeling community suggest the addition of triangular meshes (TINs) to GML. GML 3.3 is fully backwards compatible with GML 3.2.

New Micro Mapping Project in Philippines

It was revealed that President Aquino has approved the project’s budget of P1.6B. DREAM is a micro mapping project that will utilize LIDAR technology to get a picture of the ground to produce 3D maps. He said the project will prioritize the 16 river basins in the country and urban areas prone to flooding.

TomTom HD Traffic Service to Mid-range GPS Buyers

The service, which warns GPS users about reported incidents on the roads ahead, is now available on TomTom's newly-released Go Live 820. The device is SIM-enabled and runs on Vodafone's mobile network, but rather than having to purchase data, users buy a one-year subscription to TomTom Live that has data included.
