Fires in Eastern Russia

Fires in remote regions of Siberia are creating a large quantity of smoke. NASA's Terra satellite captured this image of the fires on May 24, 2011 at 02:55 UTC (10:55 p.m. EDT). The image was created from visible imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard Terra. The areas of fires are identified by the red dots. 

The large cluster of fires in this image are producing most of the smoke. Russia has reported 421 wildfires burning in forests and peat bogs over the past 24 hours, covering an area of 116,098 hectares, according to BBC News. The Russian emergency agency reports that the biggest fires were in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), the Amur region and the Krasnoyarsk territory. Read More
