India Successfully Launches Resourcesat-2

The Indian Space Resource Organization successfully launched the remote sensing satellite Resourcesat-2 and two smaller satellites at 10:12 a.m. on Wednesday. The launch also included Singapore's first remote sensing satellite called X-Sat as well as a mini satellite called Youthsat that will measure solar variability in the atmosphere.

Philippines President Commits to 3D Map to Combat Natural Disasters

Philippine President Benigno Aquino has set asside P1 billion ($23.25 million) to create a 3D map of the entire country. The detailed map is part of an effort to guard and plan against disasters, with 66 provinces under geo-hazard threat such as floods, landslides, and other natural disasters.

Trimble Enters into Definitive Agreement to Acquire Ashtech

Trimble announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held Ashtech S.A.S., headquartered in Carquefou, France, and its affiliates. The acquisition is expected to expand Trimble's Spectra Precision® portfolio of survey solutions and allow the company to better address emerging markets worldwide. Closing of the transaction, anticipated in the second quarter, is subject to certain closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Noise Mapping Urgently Needed in Mumbai

Sumaira Abdulali, convenor of the Awaaz Foundation, said a noise mapping study could help the city plan how to tackle noise pollution. According to a comparative analysis released by the Central Pollution Control Board in March, Mumbai is noisier than Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore and the busiest parts of London, New York and Beijing.

Ethiopia: Surveying Helicopter Crashes on Blue Nile River

A helicopter with a team of experts on board crashed into the Blue Nile River on Monday, when it hit a cable span. The helicopter owned by a a South African company was carrying out a feasibility study for the construction of hydro-power projects. The pilot and five passengers reportedly swam to safety and were unharmed.

Viet Nam: Infrastructure Draws Private Investment

Efforts to raise more capital from the private sector for infrastructure development projects were on the right track, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment. From now to 2020, Viet Nam will need US$160 billion to develop its economic and technical infrastructure, including transport systems, bridges, power plants, water supply networks and waste treatment plants.
