Online Imagery Continues to Improve

Aerial digital cameras and satellite imagery sensors continue to improve their resolution, with more frequent visits, and increasingly these inputs are becoming available online, and as base layers for mapping mashups. The improvements that the ever-increasing imagery layers have on mapping is profound, with the ability to greatly increase the currency and accuracy of our maps, as well as to track change over time.

Turkish National CORS Network and Applications

Recently, a national CORS network, called CORS-TR network has been established by Istanbul Kultur University in Turkey and Northern Cyprus. The network consists of 147 reference stations and three control centers collecting the GNSS data and broadcasting Real Time Kinematic (RTK) corrections.

DES and ISI Collaborate on Heat Island Mapping

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 12th April 2011 between the Institute Sultan Iskandar, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (ISI) and DES Consulting Pte Ltd, Singapore (DES) to cooperate on the field of urban heat island mapping and simulation studies. This effort is important for climatic change studies, sustainable planning and architecture development, energy efficiency management, carbon footprint and other related fields.

Japan: Damage / Needs Assessment Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami

The survey team which consisted of SEEDS Asia, OYO International Corporation and Kyoto University conducted the survey in Iwate and Miyagi Prefecture, the most affected area by the tsunami, in order to understand the damages by the earthquake and tsunami and to grasp the needs of the local community and the government. Esri Signs Strategic Contract with GeoEye

Esri will blend highly accurate imagery with its current imagery data from multiple sensors to produce a global, static cache map layer. This imagery base layer will be displayed and served to Esri users via ArcGIS.com, an online system for working with geographic information through a range of GIS desktops, Web browsers and mobile devices.

Topcon - First to Track New GLONASS K1 Satellite Signals

Within an hour of the first signal emanating from the new GLONASS K1 satellite on April 7, Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) engineers were tracking the satellite’s L1 and L2 signals. TPS receivers tracked the new code division multiple access (CDMA) L3 signals the same day. Topcon was the first major company to track the three signals from the newly launched satellite.
