Indonesia Wants National Parks to be Profit Centers

The government is preparing a policy to hand the management of national parks to private sectors, expecting it to halt forest loss while helping to create forests as “profit centers”. Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan said that national parks were costly to the state budget. “We estimate that the optimal use of resources at national parks could contribute Rp 19 trillion (US$2 billion) per year to the state budget by 2030,” he told a seminar on forests organized by the University of Indonesia on Wednesday.
