8.9 Magnitude Earthquake Off Coast of Japan

thumb_japan_quakeAn 8.9 magnitude earth earthquake has struck off the coast of northern Japan. The earthquake has generated a 10 m high tsunami that is reportedly extending a kilometer inland in some locations. Japan sits atop one of the most active earthquake zones on the planet and this region has continually experienced earthquake activity. 

Earthquake Report indicates that several towns have been impacted and some have been completely destroyed. This massive earthquake was shallow, arising near the surface. 

Fires are reported in several regions. The tsunami that was generated has moved across several regions carrying a large amount of mud and debris.  Economic Times indicates that the Asian stock markets have been significantly impacted by the event. 

Trains have been impacted throughout the northern Japan area due to damage on the rail networks. It is not known when services will resume to normal.
