World Cup Satellite Helps Protect SA Waters from Pirates

A satellite navigation system installed by SA as a contingency measure for last year’s Soccer World Cup has become a leading tool to fight piracy, Karl Otto, executive head of the South African Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa), told a conference yesterday. Samsa’s centre for sea watch and response, through the long- range identification and tracking system, can identify and track vessels up to 1000 nautical miles (1850km), as well as SA-flagged vessels anywhere in the world.
