Measuring Sea-level at Macquarie Island Not So Easy

Macquarie Island represents an important vantage point to measure changing sea levels in the middle of the wild Southern Ocean. Physically measuring sea level in such a harsh environment is a challenge - if the 10 m+ waves don't cause problems, the tons of kelp will. Postgraduate students have worked with the Australian Antarctic Division on a technique for calibrating the unique tide gauge at Macquarie Island .
