 Vietnam and Cambodia Embark on Extensive Survey to Determine Shared Border

The border between Cambodia and Vietnam is set to be refined with an extensive surveying and mapping project. The Vietnam-Cambodia Joint Committee on Border Demarcation announced the award for a two-year, US $1.5 million mapping project to the Danish team from BlomInfo A/S on Dec. 17. The bidding award will be followed by further negotiations on requirements and technical specifications in the coming year, with mapping set to conclude by August 2012.

 The Power of GIS and SMS Alert Services

Communicating important messages can be triggered through geographic information systems (GIS) activities. Using mobile devices, short message service (SMS) occur as text messages and often originate automatically. Deteriorating weather forecasts, tsunami alerts, flood events and pollution impacts are examples of events that can be communicated to mobile devices to warn and inform people. These messages tend to be short and are intended to cause immediate action.

ESA Releases Latest Map of World's Land Cover

ESA's 2009 global land cover map has been unveiled and is available on the 'GlobCover' website. The map was produced using 12 months of data from Envisat's Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer at a resolution of 300 m.

China May Spend $1.7 Trillion in Decade on Power Generation

China, the world’s largest energy user, may spend 11.1 trillion yuan ($1.7 trillion) in the next 10 years building electricity infrastructure according to a research report by the China Electricity Council. China may boost investment in power grids and electricity stations to 5.3 trillion yuan from 2011 to 2015, up 68 percent from spending in 2006 to 2010, according to Wei Shaofeng, deputy director at the council.

Japanese Geographical Survey Institute is Based on Satellite Images

Japan Broadcasting Association Web site reported that the Japanese Geographical Survey Institute is based on satellite images, there is a dispute between Japan and Russia under the "northern territories" topography, to map out the local version of topographic map.

Launch of New Russian Navigation Satellite Postponed to Next Year

The launch of Russia's new-generation Glonass-K satellite has been postponed until 2011, the Defense Ministry said on Tuesday. The satellite atop a Soyuz-2.1.b carrier rocket was to blast off from the Plesetsk Space Center on December 28. "Preparations have not been completed for the ground complex to navigate the Glonass-K spacecraft," the ministry's statement said.

World Bank Approves $1.5 bn for India's Rural Roads

The World Bank on Tuesday approved a USD 1.5 billion Credit and Loan for India's Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) aimed towards improving rural accessibility of roads. The new project will concentrate on the states of Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh, the Bank said in a statement.

Azerbaijan - Conference Seminar of Navigation Committee of CIS Member States Council

Conference-seminar of Navigation Committee of CIS Member States Council of Geodesy, Cartography, Cadastre and Earth Remote Sensing took place with the support of companies  Navgeokom of Russia and Leica Geosystems of Switzerland, November 22-26, Moscow. Azerbaijan was represented in the event by Rafig Huseynli, the Chief of Topography, Geodesy and Cartography Department of the State Land and Cartography Committee. The conference-seminar featured practical discussions and comprehensive information on latest equipments to be applied in geodesy, cartography, cadastre, earth remote sensing and navigation (land scanners).
 

Optech Acquires Second Photogrammetric Camera Company
 
Optech Incorporated announced today that it has acquired the operations and assets of Geospatial Systems, Inc. (GSI), a United States camera and imaging company. “Photogrammetric imagery and lidar data collection technologies continue to merge into a single mainstream technology,” said Don Carswell, Optech’s President. "We are very impressed by GSI's capabilities in the design, engineering and manufacturing of georeferenced metric electro-optical, infrared (EO/IR) and multispectral imaging systems.
